Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks is currently leading the fan voting for the NBA All-Star Game, while LeBron James from the Los Angeles Lakers is on track to extend his remarkable record by being selected for the 21st time. This early fan engagement highlights the ongoing excitement surrounding these two superstars.
The initial update on this season’s All-Star voting was shared on Thursday, revealing that Antetokounmpo has garnered approximately 1.7 million votes, placing him at the forefront. Following closely is Nikola Jokić from the Denver Nuggets, who has received around 1.4 million votes, making him the leading candidate among Western Conference players.
The top ten players poised for selection as starters, based on current fan balloting, include Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum from Boston, Karl-Anthony Towns of New York, LaMelo Ball from Charlotte, and Donovan Mitchell of Cleveland in the Eastern Conference. In the West, Jokić leads alongside Kevin Durant from Phoenix, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City, Luka Dončić from Dallas, and James.
This year marks a significant change in the All-Star format, introducing three games. A total of 24 All-Stars will be divided into three teams of eight players each, drafted by TNT personalities and NBA legends Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith.
The teams will compete in a four-team tournament, which will also feature a squad of NBA rookies and second-year players from the Rising Stars event on All-Star Friday. The tournament consists of two semifinal games, leading to a championship game, where the first team to score 40 points will be crowned the winner.
This new format is a stark contrast to last year’s All-Star Game, which ended with an astonishing score of 211-186, the highest-scoring game in history.
Voting for the All-Star Game will remain open until January 20, providing fans with ample opportunity to support their favorite players.
Fan votes contribute 50% to the selection of All-Star starters, while media votes account for 25%, and current NBA players make up the remaining 25%.
The official announcement of the ten players designated as starters will take place on January 23, while the reserves, chosen by NBA head coaches, will be revealed on January 30.
