Frank Lampard returns to coaching as he takes the helm at Coventry City, stepping into the role of head coach for the club competing in the second tier of English football.
The 46-year-old manager has signed a contract that will keep him at the club for 2 1/2 years.
Coventry owner Doug King expressed confidence in Lampard’s abilities, stating that he possesses a “clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level.”
Since leaving Chelsea in June of last year, Lampard has been absent from the managerial scene after a brief interim period.
His previous stint at Chelsea lasted from 2019 to 2021, followed by a short-lived role at Everton.
Lampard also brings valuable experience from the Championship, having started his managerial journey with Derby County.
“Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this league to be successful,” King noted, emphasizing Lampard’s familiarity with the challenges of second-tier football.
This appointment marks a notable shift for Lampard, who was once seen as a promising coaching talent after just one season with Derby before his Chelsea tenure.
A legendary figure at Chelsea, he was dismissed in January 2021 following a series of disappointing results, paving the way for Thomas Tuchel, who later led the team to Champions League glory.
During his time at Everton, Lampard successfully guided the club away from relegation after taking over mid-season in 2022, but he was let go less than a year later with the team struggling near the bottom of the table.
As interim manager at Chelsea, he faced challenges, securing only one win in 11 matches and suffering eight losses.
