Former top WR recruit Johntay Cook II leaves Texas in 'mutual decision'

Former top wide receiver recruit Johntay Cook II has officially departed from the Texas Longhorns program, as confirmed by head coach Steve Sarkisian on Thursday. This decision comes after a season where Cook struggled to find significant playing time.

Sarkisian described the decision as “mutual between the two of us,” although he did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding Cook’s exit.

“We have nothing but respect for him and his family. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” Sarkisian stated, indicating a positive regard for Cook’s contributions.

Cook, who was highly regarded as one of the nation’s top receivers when he signed with Texas from Dallas, recorded eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns over six games this season. However, he has not made a catch since the Longhorns’ game against Mississippi State on September 28. Last season, he managed eight catches for 136 yards across 14 games.

Despite expectations for a larger role in the Texas passing offense this season, Cook faced stiff competition from a crowded receiving group that included transfers Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden, and Silas Bolden, along with the rising talents of DeAndre Moore and freshman Ryan Wingo.

As Texas (7-1, 3-1) prepares to face Florida (4-4, 2-3) on Saturday, the Longhorns remain a strong contender, currently ranked No. 5 in the College Football Playoff standings, showcasing their resilience in a competitive Southeastern Conference.
