The ultimate Team USA flag football roster is taking shape following the excitement of the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, which shone a light on hockey as Team Canada edged out Team USA with a thrilling 3-2 victory on Thursday evening.
This event has sparked discussions across the sports community, particularly during this typically quieter time after the Super Bowl. Ideas for innovative changes in various sports are being proposed, including a potential USA versus the world format for the NBA All-Star Game.
As the world of football prepares for international competition, flag football will debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics. Although the Olympics are still a few years away, conversations about the ideal Team USA roster for flag football are already underway.
Imagine if the NFL organized its own international tournament, similar to the 4 Nations Face-Off, and Team USA was tasked with selecting its squad. According to Olympic regulations, the roster would comprise 12 players for a 5-on-5 format.
Here’s a look at the roster selections.
OFFENSE
For the quarterback position, the ideal choice combines exceptional passing with remarkable running ability. Lamar Jackson stands out as arguably the best running quarterback in NFL history, having set the record for rushing touchdowns at his position last season. His passing game has also flourished, with impressive stats in 2024, including 4,172 yards, 41 touchdowns, and only four interceptions.
In short, Jackson is the perfect fit for the quarterback role on a flag football team.
While other options like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen are strong candidates, their styles differ. Mahomes, often regarded as the league’s best quarterback, lacks the speed of Jackson. Allen, known for his dual-threat capability, plays a more physical game, which doesn’t translate well to flag football. For a more traditional pocket passer, Joe Burrow or Tom Brady could be considered.
However, speed is crucial, and Jaren Daniels presents an excellent second choice, showcasing a blend of passing and agility. His rookie season with the Commanders was transformative, boasting 891 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns alongside 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdowns.
Including Saquon Barkley, the reigning AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, is a no-brainer. Barkley’s agility and speed have made him a standout, allowing him to join the 2,000-yard club last season. He also contributed significantly in the passing game with 33 receptions for 278 yards and two touchdowns, making him a versatile option capable of playing center in passing situations.
Justin Jefferson has emerged as one of the league’s premier wide receivers since entering the NFL in 2020. As the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year, he has made four All-Pro teams and holds the record for receiving yards per game. While he may not be the fastest, his route running and ability to create separation make him a valuable asset in flag football.
Ja’Marr Chase, another elite receiver, has also made a significant impact in his first four years, recording 127 receptions for 1,708 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. His ability to make contested catches would provide Jackson or Daniels with a reliable target when other options are covered.
DEFENSE
In flag football, defenses can designate one rusher to pressure the quarterback. Micah Parsons has proven to be one of the best pass rushers since joining the league in 2021, recording 12 sacks last season. His agility and reach make him an ideal choice for this role.
Similarly, Patrick Surtain II, the reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, cannot be overlooked. He has consistently shut down top receivers, recording four interceptions last season while allowing only 38 receptions for 326 yards.
L’Jarius Sneed has emerged as a top cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, earning All-Pro honors. With two interceptions last season, he has also demonstrated his ability to disrupt plays with 27 pass deflections and seven forced fumbles over his career.
Kyle Hamilton has excelled in the free safety position, earning two All-Pro nods. His ball-hawking skills and ability to play in the box, along with seven career sacks, provide flexibility for the defense.
Finally, Cooper DeJean stands out as one of the most versatile athletes in the NFL. Known for his ability to play multiple positions and for his big-play potential, his interception return touchdown in Super Bowl LIX has made him a notable figure in the league.
