Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow is “highly unlikely” to pitch again in 2024 due to a sprained elbow. This news comes directly from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who addressed the media on Saturday.
“It’s a big blow,” Roberts stated, acknowledging Glasnow’s significant impact on the team and the expectations surrounding his performance. “Certainly, there’s going to be a cost.”
Before this setback, Glasnow was making strides to return to the Dodgers’ pitching rotation. Following a simulated game, he reported discomfort in his right elbow, a setback that complicates his path back to the mound. This simulated game was a critical step in his recovery process, which he hoped would lead to a rehab assignment.
With the 2024 season now in jeopardy for the 31-year-old, his focus may shift toward preparing for the 2025 season. Glasnow has been out of action since August 11, when he was placed on the injured list due to elbow tendinitis. Although the Dodgers are likely to reach the playoffs, the limited time remaining in the MLB regular season makes it challenging for him to ramp up for postseason play.
This season was shaping up to be one of the best in Glasnow’s career, as he posted a 9-6 record with a 3.49 ERA across 22 starts. His performance justified the five-year, $136.5 million contract extension he signed in December. However, injuries continued to haunt him, reminiscent of his challenging six-year stint with the Tampa Bay Rays, during which he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021. This season, he managed to pitch a career-high 134 innings before his latest injury.
With impressive statistics early in the year, Glasnow earned his first All-Star selection and was poised to play a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ title chase. Unfortunately, his season may end on a familiar note, as injuries have repeatedly disrupted his career.
“I feel bad for Tyler because he did everything to stay healthy and get back,” Roberts reflected. “It just wasn’t going to happen.”
