The Chiefs faced an unexpected delay before their game against the Broncos, spending approximately four hours stuck on the tarmac at Kansas City International Airport due to an ice storm that swept through the area, setting the stage for an approaching blizzard.
In anticipation of the severe weather, the Chiefs attempted to reschedule their flight. However, the chartered jet they were set to use was delayed, forcing the team to maintain their scheduled mid-afternoon departure. Just prior to takeoff, airport officials declared a halt to all flight operations because of “rapid ice accumulation.”
Fortunately, a brief lull between the icy conditions and the predicted heavy snowfall allowed for the de-icing of the aircraft and the clearing of the runway, enabling the Chiefs to finally take off.
Their chartered flight was the first to leave after the airport reopened, marking a moment of relief for the team.
With a record of 15-1, the Chiefs have already secured the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and a first-round bye, making their final regular-season game less critical for them. In contrast, the matchup holds significant implications for the Broncos, who are vying for a playoff spot with a victory.
This week, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be rested, leading to backup Carson Wentz starting in his place. Additionally, right tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee) and running back Isiah Pacheco (ribs) have been ruled out, while key players like defensive tackle Chris Jones and tight end Travis Kelce are also expected to sit this one out.
The Chiefs will now await their playoff opponent, with their next game scheduled for the divisional round on January 18.
