The Chicago Bulls plan to retire Derrick Rose’s jersey next season, a move that underscores his significant impact on the franchise and its fans.
President and CEO Michael Reinsdorf personally delivered the news to Rose, a Chicago native and former MVP, indicating that his iconic No. 1 will be honored during the 2025-26 season. This prestigious recognition places Rose alongside legends like Michael Jordan (23), Scottie Pippen (33), Jerry Sloan (4), and Bob Love (10), marking him as one of the select few whose jersey numbers have been retired by the Bulls.
“Derrick is both a hometown hero and a symbol of an entire era of Bulls basketball,” stated chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, highlighting Rose’s deep connection to the city and the franchise.
This announcement coincides with a special tribute to Rose, who announced his retirement in September after an impressive 16-season career. The Bulls are honoring him with a series of tributes before and during their game against the New York Knicks.
The team plans to introduce the “Derrick Rose Experience” at the United Center’s atrium, showcasing memorabilia that reflects his remarkable journey. Players from both teams will wear themed shooting shirts featuring “1.4.25,” representing the date of the tribute and the numbers he wore throughout his career, including his time at Chicago’s Simeon Career Academy. The game will feature moments dedicated to Rose, along with acknowledgments of his family and teammates.
Rose, selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, quickly ascended from Rookie of the Year to an All-Star and ultimately to NBA MVP within his first three seasons. He remains the youngest player in league history to earn the MVP title, achieving this remarkable feat at just 22 years old.
Unfortunately, a severe knee injury during the 2012 playoffs sidelined him for nearly two full seasons, prompting him to contemplate retirement multiple times due to ongoing injury challenges.
In his career, Rose averaged 17.4 points and 5.2 assists over 723 regular-season games. Before his ACL injury 12 years ago, he averaged an impressive 21 points per game, while post-injury, he maintained an average of 15.1 points in subsequent seasons.
