Chargers will sign RB Ezekiel Elliott to practice squad for playoff run

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to sign running back Ezekiel Elliott to their practice squad as they gear up for the NFL playoffs. This strategic move, reported by FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz, adds a seasoned player to their offensive lineup.

Elliott, who was waived by the Dallas Cowboys at his request before the final week of the regular season, sought a new opportunity with a team that has playoff aspirations. With the Cowboys already out of the postseason picture, the 29-year-old running back is eager to contribute to a playoff contender.

The Chargers will kick off the wild-card round this Saturday against the Houston Texans, marking the first game of the playoff weekend. This matchup presents a crucial moment for the team as they aim for success in the postseason.

In Jim Harbaugh’s inaugural season as head coach, the Chargers have focused on a strong running game featuring J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. However, recent injuries have impacted both players. Dobbins missed four games in December due to a knee issue, while Edwards has been out for the last two weeks with an ankle injury.

Interestingly, Elliott and Dobbins both hail from Ohio State and faced off against Harbaugh when he was leading the Michigan Wolverines. This connection adds an intriguing layer to their potential collaboration on the Chargers.

During his return to the Cowboys this season, Elliott primarily served as a backup to Rico Dowdle, finishing with a career-low of 74 carries for 226 yards and three rushing touchdowns across 15 games. Throughout his career, he has participated in six playoff games, accumulating 393 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
