Chargers clinch playoff spot in Jim Harbaugh's 1st season with 40-7 rout of Patriots

The Los Angeles Chargers clinched a playoff spot with a commanding 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots, thanks in large part to Justin Herbert’s impressive performance, which included three touchdown passes. This marks the Chargers’ second postseason appearance in three years, highlighting their resurgence in the NFL.

This victory also signifies Jim Harbaugh’s successful tenure as an NFL coach, as it secures his fourth playoff appearance in five seasons, building on his previous accomplishments with the San Francisco 49ers.

Herbert’s statistics were noteworthy; he completed 26 of 38 passes for 281 yards. This achievement places him among an elite group of quarterbacks, as he becomes only the third player in NFL history to surpass 3,000 passing yards and 20 touchdown passes in each of his first five seasons, joining legends Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson.

Rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey made a significant impact, recording eight receptions for 94 yards, including touchdown catches of 6 and 40 yards. His 10-yard reception in the second quarter pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season, making him only the third rookie receiver in Chargers history to achieve this milestone.

Running back J.K. Dobbins contributed effectively as well, rushing for 76 yards and scoring a touchdown on 19 carries.

On the other hand, the Patriots are struggling, having lost six consecutive games, marking their second losing streak of the season. Their home record over the last two seasons stands at a dismal 2-14.

New England’s rookie quarterback, Drake Maye, completed 12 of 22 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. He made history by becoming the first rookie quarterback in the franchise’s history to throw a touchdown pass in eight consecutive games. However, he faced significant pressure, getting sacked four times, and a fumble in the second quarter continued his streak of eight games with at least one turnover.

The Chargers dominated the game, outgaining the Patriots 428 to 181.

Maye briefly exited the game after taking a hit to the helmet in the first quarter, prompting an evaluation for a potential head injury.

During the Patriots’ opening drive, Maye was hit by Chargers cornerback Cam Hart while scrambling near the sideline, resulting in a fumble as he fell out of bounds. No penalty was called, and after a brief delay, he was able to get up and leave the field for further evaluation.

Jacoby Brissett took over for Maye during the next series, which ended in a punt. After a Cameron Dicker 27-yard field goal extended the Chargers’ lead to 10-0, Maye returned to play during the Patriots’ third series in the second quarter.

On his first play back, Maye scrambled for 9 yards but was hit by linebacker Junior Colson, who was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Shortly after, Maye misfired on a toss to Demario Douglas, resulting in a fumble that was recovered by Derwin James.

The Chargers capitalized on this turnover, taking possession at the New England 44. After nine plays, Herbert found McConkey for a 6-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 17-0.

Injuries

For the Chargers, wide receiver Joshua Palmer left the game in the third quarter due to a heel injury. Defensive back Elijah Molden also limped off the field after a collision but returned, only to be carted off later due to a shin injury.

The Patriots also faced injury concerns, as cornerback Christian Gonzalez left the game in the second quarter for evaluation and was later ruled out with a concussion.

Rookie Record

McConkey, a promising second-round draft choice, set a new franchise record for catches by a rookie, surpassing the previous record held by Keenan Allen, who recorded 71 catches in 2013.

Up Next

The Chargers will head to Las Vegas for their regular-season finale, while the Patriots will host the Buffalo Bills in their season-ending matchup next Sunday.
