Carmelo Anthony, Sue Bird, Doc Rivers, Mark Few among Hall of Fame candidates

Carmelo Anthony stands a chance to enter the Basketball Hall of Fame not just once, but potentially twice next year.

On Thursday, the Hall of Fame announced its list of candidates for the Class of 2025, featuring first-time nominees like Anthony, alongside other retired NBA legends such as Dwight Howard and Marc Gasol.

The list also includes WNBA icons like Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, and Chamique Holdsclaw. Notable NBA figures such as coaches Doc Rivers and Billy Donovan, along with Miami Heat’s managing general partner Micky Arison, Gonzaga men’s coach Mark Few, and former Iowa women’s coach Lisa Bluder, are also being considered for the honor.

Among those nominated again is the celebrated 2008 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team, which featured Anthony as a key player.

In a significant update, the Hall has revised its eligibility requirements, shortening the waiting period for player candidates from three full seasons out of the game to two. This change received unanimous support from the Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors.

Thursday’s announcement marks the beginning of the selection process. Finalists will be determined on February 14 in San Francisco during NBA All-Star weekend, with the enshrinement class set to be revealed on April 5 in San Antonio at the men’s NCAA Final Four.

The enshrinement ceremonies will take place on September 5 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut and on September 6 at the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

A total of 189 candidates are under consideration across various categories, as stated by the Hall.
