Bradley Beal directly addressed the ongoing trade rumors surrounding him, asserting, “I hold the cards.” This statement highlights his control over his future, given his no-trade clause with the Phoenix Suns.
In an unexpected twist, Beal took on the role of a substitute for the first time in nine years during Monday’s matchup. Despite the unfamiliarity of coming off the bench, he shone brightly, leading the Suns with 25 points in their 109-99 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, effectively ending a four-game losing streak.
Displaying resilience, Beal scored 20 of his points in the second half, helping the Suns rally from an early 12-point deficit. This victory marked only the second win for Phoenix in their last nine games.
Postgame, the 31-year-old Beal expressed his acceptance of coach Mike Budenholzer’s lineup decision but firmly maintained his belief in his status as a starter in the league.
“Coach made his decision. Live with it,” Beal stated in an interview with AZCentral.com. “I’m a starter in the league. I firmly believe that. No disrespect to anybody, but I’m a starter. … I’m not going to sit there and argue with him. I’m not going to sit here and be a distraction.”
The last time Beal came off the bench was during the 2015-16 season while recovering from an injury with the Washington Wizards.
Budenholzer also opted to place Jusuf Nurkic, who was returning from a three-game suspension, in a reserve role. He noted that both players handled the news professionally.
“I feel like we needed to make a change,” Budenholzer explained. “Throughout a 48-minute game, you’ve got to figure out your best combinations, your best ways to try to have success. They’re two important players to us, two very good players for us. We just felt like we needed to make a change.”
He added, “They’re pros. I talked to each of them individually. They want what’s best for the team. I have a lot of respect for them and an appreciation for them.”
The combination of Beal and Nurkic (who contributed five points and seven rebounds) provided a significant lift to the Suns’ bench, with Phoenix reserves outscoring Philadelphia’s bench 54-7.
“What he was able to do tonight really put us in a great spot, made a bunch of plays for himself, a bunch of plays for his teammates,” Budenholzer said, praising Beal’s performance. “He’s been a pro. He was there for us tonight in a big way.”
When questioned about whether the lineup change was related to trade discussions, Beal remained firm.
“If so, I need to be addressed because I hold the cards,” he reiterated. “Until I am addressed and somebody says something differently, I’ll be a Sun.”
