It’s no surprise that football took the crown at the King of Sportsbooks in 2022 – but sports betting across all sports swamped BetMGM Sportsbook in the busiest year in the popular US sportsbook’s history.
From Mattress Mack’s record-breaking $10 million win with the Houston Astros to the red hot betting interest in Aaron Judge’s American League home run record break, there was no shortage of headlines at BetMGM Sportsbook in 2022.

The NFL dominated the list of most-betted events in terms of ticket totals, led (of course) by the Rams’ thrilling Super Bowl win over the Bengals. Early-season marquee matchups are also scattered on this list, while the 2022 Masters is the only non-NFL sportsbook event on the list.

When the stakes are high on the field, sportsbooks follow suit – and it’s evident here when the last three games of the NFL season are joined by the men’s college football and men’s college basketball championship games. This reinforces the point that once the calendar hits January 1st, there will be a significant spike in sports betting activity in the US.

We can learn a lot about sports betting trends by looking at this list. It combines the big events you would expect with surprise results like the MLB Home Run Derby and NHL futures betting on the Colorado Avalanche to win the Stanley Cup. And USA’s inclusion in the World Cup led to bets on this team representing each of the top three soccer results of 2022.

Nothing comes close to Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale’s epic eight-figure win in the Astros World Series win – but I love the variety of sports betting markets here. We’ve got three different Rams-specific Super Bowl bets, a big bet on Kansas State winning the Big 12 championship as a live underdog, and a couple of huge scoops in back-to-back Dodgers regular-season games.
Most NFL Players*
player | team |
???? QB Joe Burrow | Cincinnati Bengal |
???? QB Patrick Mahomes | Kansas City bosses |
????QB Matthew Stafford | Los Angeles Rams |
QB Josh Allen | buffalo bills |
RB Joe Mixon | Cincinnati Bengal |
QB Justin Fields | Chicago Bears |
QB Tom Brady | Tampa Bay Buccaneers |
RB Saquon Barkley | New York Giants |
WR Cooper Coup | Los Angeles Rams |
QB Aaron Rodgers | Green Bay packers |

Quarterbacks are great targets for prop betting due to their high profile and the number of prop markets available (especially for the marquee options). Only three non-QBs made the list, led by Bengals running back Joe Mixon (who no doubt drew a lot of attention from sports bettors after his five-touchdown masterpiece in a Week 9 win against the Carolina Panthers).

NBA
player | team |
????G Stephen Curry | Warriors of the Golden State |
????G Luka Doncic | Dallas Mavericks |
???? F Jayson Tatum | Boston Celtics |
The NBA’s most-betted roster is a who’s who of future Hall of Famer talent, led by the league’s two most popular guards. Big men Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers round out the top five, while forward Giannis Antetokounmpo sits just outside.

MLB
player | team |
???? BY Aaron Richter | New York Yankees |
???? 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. | Toronto Blue Jays |
???? DH/P Shohei Ohtani | Angels from Los Angeles |
Judge’s historic home run for the AL MVP award lands at the top of this list, with two household names right behind him. NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt saw the fourth highest ticket volume.
NHL
player | team |
???? F. Nathan MacKinnon | Colorado Avalanche |
????D Cale Makar | Colorado Avalanche |
???? F. Connor McDavid | Edmonton oiler |
The combination of star power, a Stanley Cup run, and a thriving Centennial State hockey betting base saw MacKinnon and Makar dominate player prop plays in 2022. The third name on this list isn’t crazy, but Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad at No. 1. 4 is a slight surprise.

golf
player |
???? Scottie Scheffler |
????JustinThomas |
????Rory McIlroy |
Ranked 1st, 2nd and 8th in the Official World Golf Rankings make up the top of the PGA Tour’s most popular golfers, with third and seventh placed golfers Cameron Smith and Will Zalatoris rounding out the top five. In other words, golf bettors tend to buy at the top of the odds list.
tennis
player |
????Rafael Nadal |
????Carlos Alcaraz |
???? Daniil Medvedev |
Alcaraz is almost certainly the next big thing in tennis, while Medvedev became the first player outside of the sport’s ‘Big Four’ to hold the No. 1 ranking since 2004. And yet they could not match the sports betting appeal of Nadal. who continues to defy the odds (and his age) at 36.
ufc
fighter |
???? Israel Adesanya |
????Kevin Holland |
???? Sean O’Malley |
BetMGM’s list of top-capping UFC fighters for 2022 shows just how broad the sport’s global appeal has become. Seven different countries are represented on the top 10 list, led by Adesanya from New Zealand; Only the USA (three) and Brazil (two) have multiple fighters in the top 10.
boxes
fighter |
???? Canelo Alvarez |
???? Gennady Golovkin |
???? Tyson Fury |
This might be the most predictable list of all that BetMGM has provided (at least for those who even casually follow the sweet science). Alvarez-Golovkin III was one of the must-see fights of 2022, while Fury continues to attract huge betting interest as it has for years.

Ohio won’t introduce legal sports betting until Sunday, but betting on domestic athletes has been quite profitable for BetMGM Sportsbook, with three entries on that list. Kupp’s injury-ravaged 2022 season left bettors wanting, while Judge likely disappointed users in games leading up to his record-breaking home run every night.

Those who believed in SGA’s incredible breakout season and Fields’ absurd weekly totals were handsomely rewarded at BetMGM, which saw a nearly even split between NBA and NFL liabilities on this list. Nice to see Ryan show up (anytime INTs, everyone) and hey – we even have a foosball! Aren’t sports bets great?
