Bradley Beal’s future with the Phoenix Suns remains uncertain.
Recently moved to the bench, the three-time NBA All-Star has found himself at the center of trade discussions. With an average of 17.8 points per game, Beal is experiencing his lowest scoring output since the 2015-16 season. Complications arise for the Suns, as he is 31 years old, in the third year of a five-year, $251 million contract, possesses a no-trade clause, and has struggled with injuries, playing fewer than 60 games since the 2020-21 season.
Despite these challenges, Beal remains an efficient scorer, boasting nearly 49% shooting from the field and close to 40% from three-point range this season.
If Beal chooses to waive his no-trade clause, several teams could emerge as potential landing spots.
3. Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic are poised to welcome back Paolo Banchero and are eagerly awaiting Franz Wagner’s return from injury. With both players back on the court, a trio of Banchero, Wagner, and Beal could create a formidable offensive lineup.
Orlando’s youthful roster could facilitate a blockbuster deal. To complement their emerging stars, adding a seasoned player like Beal would enhance their scoring capabilities, especially since they currently rank last in the NBA in points per game (105.2 as of January 8).
A potential trade could involve Jonathan Isaac and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope heading to Phoenix in exchange for Beal and a future second-round pick. This arrangement would provide the Suns with two immediate contributors while allowing the Magic to significantly boost their offensive output. Orlando could still have room for further moves, ideally targeting younger stars on favorable contracts.
Alternatively, the Magic might opt to let Jalen Suggs, who is averaging a career-high 16.4 points, recover fully and focus on acquiring a younger star during the offseason.
2. Miami Heat
Jimmy Butler’s desire to be traded from the Miami Heat has sparked interest in a potential deal with the Suns.
If Beal joins Miami, he could seamlessly integrate into the starting lineup, filling the scoring gap left by Butler’s exit. While some may prefer Butler’s talents, Beal would be the most attainable star for the Heat in a trade scenario.
Pairing Beal with Tyler Herro could create a potent scoring combination, while Bam Adebayo could emerge as the new focal point of the team. This move would align with Miami’s strategy of retooling rather than rebuilding, especially if Butler is moved.
A possible trade could see Miami sending Butler and Alec Burks to Phoenix for Beal and a collection of second-round picks. The Suns’ worst-case scenario would involve Butler opting out of his $52.4 million player option for the following season, freeing up significant salary cap space.
However, a deal between the Suns and Heat poses challenges in crafting a financially viable proposal that satisfies both teams without excessive player movement. The Suns also face limitations in draft capital following their 2023 trade for Kevin Durant, which involved trading four first-round picks.
So, which team is the most suitable for Beal?
1. San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are showing signs of growth, and Beal could be the key player to elevate their performance.
With Victor Wembanyama emerging as a star and Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell contributing as solid perimeter scorers, the Spurs are on the right track. However, to transition from a play-in team (currently 18-18 and ninth in the Western Conference) to a legitimate contender, they require another high-level scorer.
Beal would step in as San Antonio’s second-leading scorer and its most reliable offensive threat. His ability to attack the basket would complement Wembanyama’s versatility and the Spurs’ emphasis on three-point shooting.
A potential trade could involve sending Harrison Barnes, Zach Collins, and Tre Jones to Phoenix for Beal and a second-round pick. The Suns would gain three rotation players, while the Spurs would part ways with individuals who may not fit into their long-term plans without sacrificing a first-round pick.
Although Beal’s contract is substantial, his addition could significantly enhance San Antonio’s offensive capabilities and help them rise in the Western Conference standings.
