The best dunk contest of the year is … by the Nebraska football team?

The best dunk contest of the year is undoubtedly the one organized by the Nebraska football team. Scheduled for Feb. 15, basketball enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, but the Cornhuskers’ annual event has carved out its own niche that deserves attention.

This year’s dunk contest took place during halftime of Nebraska’s game against the No. 18 Illinois Fighting Illini. As is often the case in sports, an unexpected standout emerged from the competition:

Jeremiah Charles, the reigning champion, showcased his skills with a remarkable one-handed reverse dunk, attempting to defend his title. However, despite impressive performances from fellow athletes Emmett Johnson, Connor Schutt, Quinn Clark, and Dasan McCullough, it was Heinrich Haarberg, a quarterback-turned-tight end, who ultimately claimed the crown.

The junior captivated the audience with a spectacular dunk, bouncing the ball off the backboard before slamming it home, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Dylan Raiola, Haarberg’s former backup and a promising freshman for the 7-6 Huskers, was also present. He sported a special jersey in support of Nebraska alum Keisei Tominaga, who has been invited to participate in the G League Up Next Game during NBA All-Star Weekend. Raiola, likely focusing on his role as the starting quarterback, opted to watch the festivities unfold rather than join in.

While the basketball game between the Cornhuskers and the Illini featured its fair share of exciting dunks, Haarberg’s performance will be the highlight that fans remember long after the final whistle.
