The AP Top 25 reveals that Kansas has successfully maintained its grip on the No. 1 position, securing 35 out of 61 first-place votes. Auburn, after clinching the Maui title, has risen to No. 2 with 26 votes. Meanwhile, UConn has experienced a dramatic drop, now sitting at No. 25, narrowly avoiding the rare occurrence of falling from No. 2 to unranked within a single week—a feat only achieved by one other team in the last 40 years.
This week’s rankings reflect the chaos of holiday tournaments, which saw six new teams making their debut in the Top 25.
Joining Auburn in the upper echelon are fellow SEC teams Tennessee and Kentucky, both of which climbed four spots to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Marquette follows closely at No. 5, with Iowa State, Gonzaga, Purdue, Duke, and Alabama completing the top 10.
Oregon stands out among the newcomers at No. 12, with Memphis at No. 16, Pittsburgh at No. 18, Illinois at No. 19, Oklahoma at No. 21, and San Diego State at No. 24 also making their mark.
Notable teams that have fallen out of the rankings include Indiana, Arkansas, Creighton, Xavier, Arizona, and Mississippi State.
