Angels’ $245M man Anthony Rendon is set to undergo hip surgery, marking yet another injury setback since his arrival with the Los Angeles Angels.
According to general manager Perry Minasian, the 34-year-old third baseman will be sidelined for an extended period, although no specific timeline for his recovery has been disclosed.
In his sixth season of a lucrative $245 million, seven-year deal, Rendon has managed to play only 205 games over the last four seasons, spending a total of 12 stints on the injured list since 2021.
The Angels signed him in 2020, following a stellar season with the Washington Nationals in which he boasted a .319 batting average, hit 34 home runs, and led the league with 126 RBIs, contributing significantly to the Nationals’ first World Series championship.
During his time with the Angels, Rendon has struggled, recording a batting average of just .242, with 22 home runs and 125 RBIs in 257 games. In contrast, his tenure with the Nationals saw him achieve a .290 average, 136 homers, and 546 RBIs over seven seasons.
In light of Rendon’s absence, newly-signed Yoan Moncada is expected to step in at third base. Moncada faced his own challenges last season, appearing in only 12 games due to an adductor injury but managed to hit .260 with 11 home runs and a .730 OPS in 2023.
Moncada recently joined the Angels on a one-year, $5 million contract, providing the team with a potential solution during Rendon’s recovery.
