The New York Jets have officially announced they are moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This decision comes as Rodgers reflects on his future in the sport, indicating that if he continues to play, it will not be with the Jets.
In a joint statement released Thursday, head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey expressed, “Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback. It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”
Team owner Woody Johnson remarked that Rodgers “embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet,” highlighting the quarterback’s impact during his time with the team.
This decision follows a report from FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, which indicated that the Jets had informed Rodgers of their plans to part ways.
At the conclusion of the Jets’ disappointing 5-12 season, Rodgers expressed uncertainty about his playing future, mentioning a desire to take “a break mentally to kind of refresh and put my feet in the sand, and see where I’m at after that.”
Questions loomed about whether the Jets would retain the four-time MVP as their starting quarterback. With the recent hiring of Mougey and Glenn, Johnson emphasized at their introductory press conference that the new leadership would have the final say on the quarterback situation.
According to NFL Media, Rodgers is set to be designated as a post-June 1 release, which would allow his $49 million dead-cap hit to be distributed over two years.
Glazer reported on Super Bowl Sunday that Rodgers had met with the Jets in New Jersey, where he was informed of the team’s future direction.
The Jets currently have veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor and rookie Jordan Travis, who missed his entire first season due to injury, on their roster. Additionally, with the No. 7 overall pick in the upcoming draft, the team may target a new quarterback.
Rodgers, who joined the Jets after an illustrious 18-season career with the Green Bay Packers, has one year of non-guaranteed money remaining on his contract. He would count $23.5 million against the salary cap if he remains on the roster.
Should Rodgers retire or be released, the Jets would be able to manage their salary cap more effectively.
After his trade to the Jets in April 2023, Rodgers’ debut season was marred by a torn left Achilles tendon that cut his first game short. Although he returned to play this season and started every game, his performance was inconsistent.
Despite throwing 28 touchdown passes and amassing 3,897 passing yards—both ranking third in franchise history for a single season—Rodgers struggled to recapture his previous form.
In his final game with the Jets, he showcased a glimpse of his former self by throwing a season-high four touchdown passes in a victory over Miami on January 5. However, such standout performances were rare during his brief tenure with New York.
