Bears, Ben Johnson reportedly finalizing deal to make him next head coach

Ben Johnson is reportedly finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Chicago Bears, a significant move within the NFC North rivalry.

According to NFL Media, Johnson, 38, is set to lead a Bears team that has struggled in recent seasons, finishing with a disappointing 5-12 record last year, marking their fourth consecutive losing season.

Before this new chapter, Johnson spent five years with the Detroit Lions, where he held multiple roles, including offensive quality control coach and passing game coordinator. His tenure as offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2024 saw the Lions emerge as one of the NFL’s most potent offenses, consistently ranking in the top five for both points and total yards.

Taking the helm in Chicago presents Johnson with a unique opportunity to mentor rising star Caleb Williams, the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Williams, known for his impressive skills, could thrive under Johnson’s guidance, potentially revitalizing the Bears’ offense.

Johnson’s coaching journey includes experience with the Miami Dolphins, where he held various positions from 2012 to 2018, including roles as offensive assistant and wide receivers coach. His prior connection with Dan Campbell, the Lions’ head coach, dates back to their time together in Miami, where Campbell served as tight ends coach.

While the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars also pursued Johnson’s services, his decision to join the Bears highlights his commitment to turning around a franchise in need of fresh leadership. As he steps into this pivotal role, fans will be eager to see how his offensive strategies and coaching philosophy shape the team’s future.
