Deion Sanders: NFL interest would 'only' be to coach sons Shedeur and Shilo

Deion Sanders has made it clear that his interest in coaching at the NFL level hinges solely on one condition: the opportunity to coach his sons. While speculation will continue about Coach Prime’s future, he has firmly stated that coaching his children is the only scenario that would draw him to the professional league.

“The only way I would consider [coaching in the NFL] is to coach my sons,” Sanders declared during an appearance on “Good Morning America,” emphasizing the word “sons” to stress the personal nature of his coaching ambitions.

His sons, Shedeur Sanders, a quarterback, and Shilo Sanders, a safety, have both benefited from their father’s guidance since high school. Each has played under his leadership for two seasons at Jackson State (2021-22) and is currently making their mark at Colorado (2023-24).

Shedeur Sanders stands out as a leading prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft, with expectations of being selected within the top three picks. Teams like the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants are among the frontrunners for a quarterback in the upcoming draft.

This past season, Shedeur amassed impressive stats, totaling 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 168.2, all while completing 74.0% of his passes. His performance led the Big 12 in multiple categories, earning him the title of Offensive Player of the Year.

On the defensive side, Shilo Sanders recorded 67 combined tackles, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and one sack. Before joining Jackson State, he played for two seasons at South Carolina (2019-20).

In the NFL landscape, several teams, including the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders, are currently searching for head coaches. Among these franchises, the Jets, Saints, and Raiders face long-term uncertainties regarding their quarterback situations, yet they are not positioned to draft in the top five, limiting their chances of selecting Shedeur unless trades occur.

Deion Sanders has led the Buffaloes to a successful 9-4 season, a notable improvement from the previous year’s 4-8 record, showcasing his ability to elevate the program.
