Tom Brady expressed that Bill Belichick taking the head coaching position at North Carolina “blew me away,” reflecting the unexpected nature of this career move. As the news settled, Brady began to envision how the Tar Heels could evolve under Belichick’s guidance.
During a broadcast for the Pittsburgh Steelers-Philadelphia Eagles game on FOX, Brady shared his surprise. He believes that Belichick’s transition to college football could yield impressive results in Chapel Hill.
“I didn’t think that was an opportunity he was looking at,” Brady remarked. “They’re gaining a remarkable coach. The players will work hard, and he will instruct them effectively. This is a significant advantage for all those athletes joining the program, as they are receiving mentorship from one of the best coaches in NFL history.”
Belichick has already indicated that his approach at UNC will incorporate elements from the NFL. In a prior interview with ESPN, he noted his intention to create an environment that fosters NFL-ready talent. At his introductory press conference, he emphasized the importance of having a “strong presence of NFL people on the staff.”
However, executing this vision hinges on recruiting the right players. Since Belichick has never coached at the college level before, this aspect may present a unique challenge for him.
Brady, reflecting on Belichick’s personality, pondered how the coach’s demeanor would resonate with high school recruits. He shared a humorous memory from their time together.
“He’s not the warmest and fuzziest of all guys,” Brady chuckled. “I recall after winning our first Super Bowl, we were in a limo on Bourbon Street. The next morning, he said, ‘You know what, Tom? You had a pretty good season.’
“That was about as warm and fuzzy as it got with Coach Belichick.”
Recently, Belichick celebrated his first significant recruiting success. Four-star quarterback Bryce Baker from the Class of 2025 reaffirmed his commitment to North Carolina, citing Belichick’s professional background as a key factor in his decision.
Despite this win, Belichick faces a considerable task in recruitment. Currently, UNC’s Class of 2025 ranks last in the ACC according to 247Sports. With the early signing day now behind, Belichick will likely need to leverage the transfer portal while showcasing a more personable side to attract new talent.
