How Michigan flipped star QB Bryce Underwood from LSU

Michigan flipped star QB Bryce Underwood from LSU earlier this week, creating a buzz in the college football community. Underwood is considered one of the nation’s premier quarterback prospects, and his decision to switch allegiances marks a significant victory for the Wolverines.

If Underwood officially joins Michigan, it will be a remarkable accomplishment for the Wolverines and their new head coach, Sherrone Moore. The team has faced challenges this season, particularly due to inconsistent quarterback performances, making Underwood’s potential addition even more critical. Moreover, this move allows a local talent to stay close to home.

Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 205 pounds, Underwood hails from Belleville High School, located just 15 miles east of Ann Arbor. Despite expressing his commitment to LSU nearly a year ago, recent developments have shifted the landscape.

Initially, Underwood seemed steadfast in his commitment to LSU, even donning LSU-themed jewelry during a recent visit to Baton Rouge. However, as rumors of Michigan’s renewed interest swirled, the dynamics began to change.

Recently, FOX Sports college football insider Bruce Feldman provided insights into this unexpected turn of events while appearing on the “Big Noon Kickoff” show.

“Underwood had been committed to LSU for almost a year,” Feldman noted. “This move sent shockwaves across the college football recruiting scene.”

While Underwood grew up admiring Michigan, Feldman pointed out that former head coach Jim Harbaugh did not actively pursue him like some other programs.

So, what led to Michigan’s resurgence in Underwood’s recruitment? Feldman highlighted two pivotal factors.

First, Sherrone Moore made Underwood a top priority, with significant assistance from a key staff member.

“After Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL, Sean Magee, Michigan’s Associate Athletic Director for Football, returned to the program after a stint with the Chicago Bears,” Feldman explained. “He worked diligently to mend and strengthen the relationship with Underwood, making him a priority alongside Sherrone Moore.”

Second, Michigan leveraged the influence of a legendary alumnus: Tom Brady.

“A significant factor in Underwood’s flip from LSU to Michigan was the numerous Zoom calls he had with football icon and Michigan alum Tom Brady, who has become an invaluable resource for Bryce Underwood,” Feldman shared.

Feldman also mentioned that Underwood’s commitment could spark a wave of recruiting momentum for Michigan, which entered the weekend with a 5-5 record.

Currently, Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class ranks No. 9 nationally and No. 3 in the Big Ten, according to the 247 composite score.
