Oregon remains No. 1 in the AP Top 25 rankings, with Ohio State moving up to No. 2 and Texas climbing to No. 3. Penn State holds the No. 4 position, narrowly edging out No. 5 Indiana, while Tennessee sits just three points behind at No. 6.
After a decisive victory over Washington, Penn State bounced back from last week’s No. 6 ranking to reenter the top five. Indiana, fresh off a 20-15 win against Michigan, celebrated its 10th victory of the season, marking their highest ranking since finishing at No. 4 in the 1967 season.
Conversely, Georgia and Miami faced significant setbacks. The Bulldogs suffered a 28-10 defeat at Ole Miss, dropping them from No. 2 to No. 11, a notable fall that marks their first absence from the top 10 since late in the 2020 season. Meanwhile, Miami’s 28-23 loss to Georgia Tech pushed them down from No. 4 to No. 12.
The implications of these losses on College Football Playoff aspirations will be clarified when the selection committee releases its second rankings on Tuesday night. Currently, Georgia ranks as the fifth-highest SEC team in the AP poll, while Miami remains the top ACC team.
Ole Miss celebrated the most significant rise in the rankings, jumping from No. 16 to No. 10. The Rebels showcased a strong defensive effort against Georgia, following Jaxson Dart’s record-setting performance against Arkansas the previous week.
In contrast, LSU’s playoff hopes dimmed after a 42-13 home loss to Alabama, causing them to tumble from No. 14 to No. 21.
Ranked No. 18, Colorado is in a favorable position in the playoff race. The Buffaloes currently sit second in the Big 12, one game behind unbeaten BYU, which is also the second-highest ranked team in the AP poll. Notably, the two teams will not face each other in the regular season, setting the stage for a potential championship showdown if both remain undefeated.
Boise State fell one spot to No. 13 but still holds the title of the highest-ranked Group of 5 team after a 28-21 victory over Nevada.
South Carolina, now ranked No. 23, has made its way back into the Top 25 for the first time since the end of the 2022 season, following wins against ranked opponents Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
Missouri, ranked No. 24, returned to the rankings after a thrilling victory over Oklahoma, which included a late fumble return for a touchdown.
Tulane, with an impressive seven-game winning streak, made its Top 25 debut under the leadership of first-year coach Jon Sumrall.
On the other hand, Iowa State, Pitt, and Vanderbilt have dropped out of the rankings. Iowa State’s second consecutive loss came at the hands of a Kansas team that had only two wins prior. Pitt, after a tough loss to SMU the previous week, fell to Virginia at home, while Vanderbilt has struggled, losing two of its last three games.
