Grizzlies 2-time All-Star Ja Morant week to week with injured right hip

The Memphis Grizzlies confirmed on Saturday that two-time All-Star point guard Ja Morant is facing a week-to-week absence due to an injury to his right hip.

During Memphis’ recent victory against the Washington Wizards, Morant was spotted using crutches. Initially, he was reported to have sustained a right hamstring injury during the Grizzlies’ game against the Lakers on Wednesday.

Further evaluations revealed that Morant, who experienced a collision with a Lakers player while trying to catch a lob pass in the third quarter, suffered from extreme right hip flexion. Although his hip did not dislocate, he sustained a partial posterior hip dislocation along with multiple Grade 1 strains in his pelvic muscles.

The Grizzlies stated that they will provide updates on Morant’s condition “as appropriate.”

Last season, Morant began with a 25-game suspension due to off-court issues, and upon his return, he played only nine games before a shoulder injury resulted in season-ending surgery.

In the current season, he averaged 20.6 points over his first eight games. The Grizzlies, holding a record of 6-4, stood sixth in the Western Conference standings, aiming to bounce back after missing the playoffs last year.

Compounding the situation, Memphis is also without starters Marcus Smart and Desmond Bane, who are both on a week-to-week status due to injuries sustained in the same game on November 1—Smart with a sprained right ankle and Bane with a right oblique strain.
