2025 MLB free-agent rumors tracker: Mets get first meeting with Juan Soto.
As the MLB free agency period opens, all eyes are on Juan Soto, a generational talent whose future is the talk of the town. The 26-year-old outfielder, fresh off a stellar season with the New York Yankees, is poised to sign a monumental contract that could extend well into the next decade. Soto played a pivotal role in helping the Yankees return to the World Series for the first time in 15 years, and his performance has only heightened the anticipation surrounding his free agency.
After his trade from the San Diego Padres to New York last offseason, Soto is acutely aware of the potential for game-changing trades this winter. His situation is emblematic of the shifting dynamics in Major League Baseball, where star players can dramatically alter the landscape of the league.

Mets set to meet with Juan Soto
The New York Mets are making their move to secure Soto, scheduling a meeting with him in Southern California next week, as reported by the New York Post. Mets owner Steve Cohen is expected to participate in this crucial discussion alongside Soto’s agent, Scott Boras.
Having just completed a season with the Yankees, Soto is considered a prime target for the Mets, who have been speculated to be the biggest threat to their crosstown rivals. Since taking ownership in 2020, Cohen has demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in the team, making the Mets one of the league’s highest payrolls.
Reports indicate that “several” team owners are also planning to meet with Soto as November progresses, leading up to the Winter Meetings in December.
Early suitors for Teoscar Hernández
The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles have emerged as potential contenders for All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernández during this week’s General Manager Meetings, according to MLB Network.
Which teams are in on Soto?
The Yankees, Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox are expected to be the primary contenders for Soto, as reported by the New York Post. The Tampa Bay Rays are considered a long-shot, having made a significant offer to Freddie Freeman during his free agency in 2022.
As the free agency period kicks off, the Yankees and Mets stand out as the leading favorites to land Soto.
Mookie Betts to play in the infield in 2025
The Dodgers are set to reintroduce Mookie Betts to infield play, with Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes announcing that Betts will take on either second base or shortstop roles in 2025.
“For Mookie, winning is always the priority,” Gomes stated. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he says, ‘Hey, this is the best thing. I’ll play wherever.'” He noted that playing in the infield could reduce the physical toll on Betts.
Betts began the 2024 season at shortstop but shifted back to right field after a hand injury. With Betts returning to the infield, the Dodgers will have a crowded middle infield, featuring Tommy Edman, Miguel Rojas, and Gavin Lux, all under contract for 2025.

Agent: Soto will go through a thorough process in free agency
Scott Boras, Soto’s agent, indicated at the MLB General Manager Meetings that Soto will take his time during the free agency process this winter.
“Given the high level of interest and Juan’s desire to engage with teams, I can’t set a timeframe, but it will be a detailed process,” Boras said, per ESPN. “He wants to meet with teams personally and hear their plans.”
Boras downplayed comparisons between Soto and fellow superstar Shohei Ohtani, emphasizing Soto’s unique position in the market, particularly since he is younger than Ohtani was when he signed his historic deal with the Dodgers last December.
Boras noted that Soto is seeking a team with ownership committed to winning consistently. He also clarified that Soto will not consider contracts with heavy deferred payments, unlike Ohtani’s deal.
“Tax implications will not be a primary concern when discussing a deal that could yield billions for a franchise,” he stated.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman in contact with Soto, checking in on Alonso
As free agency began, Yankees GM Brian Cashman revealed he had already spoken with Soto after the Yankees’ World Series loss in late October. He also confirmed ongoing discussions with Soto’s agent.
Cashman is expected to be busy in the upcoming weeks, with first baseman Anthony Rizzo and second baseman Gleyber Torres also hitting free agency. He confirmed the Yankees’ interest in Pete Alonso, who has been a standout for the Mets.
“There are many high-quality players available, and Pete performed exceptionally well with the Mets,” Cashman noted. “I had a brief conversation with Scott about many of his free agents, including Pete.”
Regarding Torres, the Yankees did not extend him a qualifying offer, and Cashman provided a vague response about Torres’ potential return.
“I won’t detail his strengths and weaknesses. He will have many discussions with teams that need his skills, which may include us,” Cashman remarked.
The 2024-25 MLB free-agent class may potentially include another star. Reports suggest that Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki could be posted by his NPB team, the Chiba Lotte Marines. If posted, the Dodgers are considered favorites to sign the 23-year-old.
The competition for Sasaki may not be as financially driven as other free agents, as teams can only use international signing pool money to make offers. Depending on the timing of the posting, Sasaki could earn up to $8 million or around $2.5 million.
Astros GM Dana Brown prioritizes re-signing Bregman
The Houston Astros are evaluating several key free agents, including Alex Bregman, Yusei Kikuchi, and Justin Verlander. Brown made it clear that retaining Bregman is their primary focus this offseason.
“We’d love to have Alex Bregman back,” Brown stated. “It’s our biggest priority.” Despite losing several homegrown stars in recent years, Brown is optimistic about keeping Bregman.
“I’m approaching this offseason with the belief that we will retain Bregman. If he chooses to go elsewhere, we will handle that when it arises, but I believe he will be back,” Brown added.
In discussions with MLB Network, Brown mentioned initial talks with Kikuchi and Verlander’s agents, along with ongoing conversations about a potential extension for outfielder Kyle Tucker, who is entering his final year of team control.
Bo Bichette not available for trade
With Bo Bichette approaching free agency after the 2025 season, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins emphasized that the team is not looking to trade their shortstop. He stated that any trade inquiries involving Bichette would be met with an emphatic “no.”
Despite a disappointing 2024 season, where he posted a .225/.277/.322 line with just four home runs in 81 games, the Blue Jays remain committed to Bichette’s future.
Brent Rooker not available via trade
Athletics general manager David Frost confirmed that the A’s will not part with designated hitter Brent Rooker, who has been a key player as the team relocates to Sacramento next season.
“We’re going to keep Rooker,” Frost declared, underscoring the team’s commitment to their star. Rooker finished the season with 39 home runs and a 165 OPS+, making him one of the most sought-after players ahead of the 2024 trade deadline.

Dodgers in on Soto? Mets not?
The New York Mets have long been considered the frontrunners to sign Juan Soto, but the Los Angeles Dodgers are also expressing interest after defeating Soto and the Yankees in the World Series. Reports indicate that the Dodgers intend to make an offer for Soto if he shows interest, while the Yankees believe a deal between Soto and the Dodgers is unlikely. They view the Mets and Toronto Blue Jays as their primary competitors for Soto’s signature.
