Why Travis Hunter is the Dark Horse Heisman Contender in 2024 College Football

2024 College Football odds: Colorado's Travis Hunter best bet for Heisman

2024 College Football odds suggest that Colorado’s Travis Hunter is the best bet for the Heisman Trophy. The standout wide receiver and cornerback has captured the attention of fans and analysts alike as the season draws to a close.

Currently, Hunter’s odds hover around even money at various sportsbooks, with some even designating him as the odds-on favorite. This means that a wager on him may not yield substantial profits compared to the amount risked.

His remarkable performance, including nine receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown against Texas Tech in Week 11, has significantly bolstered his Heisman candidacy. Additionally, the unexpected loss of Cam Ward and the Hurricanes to Georgia Tech has shifted momentum in Hunter’s favor, as Ward was previously the frontrunner.

Hunter is enjoying one of the most impressive two-way seasons in college football history. At the start of the season, his odds were as high as 60-1, but while the chance for a massive payout has diminished, he remains a solid bet in the current landscape.

Cam Ward had a strong opportunity to claim the Heisman, especially if Miami had maintained an unbeaten record. However, that recent loss has left his chances severely compromised.

Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel stands as Hunter’s closest competitor in the odds, listed at around +350. However, his statistics fall short of what typically defines a Heisman winner, and his candidacy hinges on Oregon finishing the season undefeated.

On the other hand, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is making waves as he approaches Barry Sanders’ all-time rushing record. Yet, unless he breaks that record—a tall order—voters may hesitate to support a running back from the Mountain West Conference.

Historically, the Heisman Trophy has favored quarterbacks, with 15 of the last 18 awards going to signal-callers. If voters are inclined to break from tradition and select a non-quarterback, Travis Hunter stands out as the prime candidate.

The Colorado star’s versatility sets him apart. Unlike quarterbacks, a late-season loss may not tarnish Hunter’s chances due to his multifaceted contributions to the team. With the Buffaloes favored in two of their last three games and currently positioned as the frontrunners to win the Big 12, a conference championship could solidify Hunter’s Heisman prospects.

Even if Colorado stumbles and misses out on the College Football Playoff, Hunter’s dominance as a two-way player could still earn him the prestigious award.

While the chance for a long-shot payout has faded, betting on Hunter to win the Heisman remains a wise choice.

After all, he has proven to be one of the most exceptional football players in the nation.
