NBA – SAT 3/16 | 7:00 PM EDT | CAPITAL ONE ARENA
The Memphis Grizzlies have won three straight and four of five before getting waxed by the Hawks on the road Wednesday night. Memphis enters Friday 13th in the Western Conference, 11 games behind the Clippers for the final playoff spot. The Grizzlies trailed by five after the opening quarter and was within four with 2:19 to play in the opening half before things unraveled. A 21-4 Atlanta run over the next five-plus minutes led Memphis down 21 and nailed their fate. Memphis shot 42.7 % from the field, including 14 of 40 from three-point land, and lost the rebounding battle 51-35. CJ Miles poured in 33 points off the bench to lead Memphis in the loss.
The Washington Wizards were in action at home against Charlotte in a Southeast Division match-up between teams trying to gain ground in the playoff race. Washington enters Friday 11th in the Eastern Conference, 3.5 games behind the Heat for the final playoff spot. The Wizards are an impressive 8-4 in the second game of back to back situations this season. Washington averages 115 points per game in those situations, which is slightly better than their full season mark of 114.4 points a night. The Wizards allow 112 points per contest in those games, which is better than their full season mark of 116.8 points per night.
Washington is the third-best covering team at home in the NBA. Memphis is the third-worst covering road team. My projections don’t show any reason to fade those trends, especially as they nearly mirror their overall home/road records. Washington covers in nearly two-thirds of my simulations.
